Last ski season, Switzerland ski resorts suffered from the small amounts of snow that hit the alps. This year, the snow has been great but the number of skiers is still low. The cost of the franc, not the conditions, is the reason many tourists are staying away from Swiss slopes. The alps have been blasted with snow since September and last weekend Lori and I finally took advantage of the small crowds and big powder in the relatively unknown slopes of Bettmeralp.
Bettmeralp is actually the middle of three mountain resorts, flanked by Riederalp and Fiescheralp and the Unesco-protected Aletsch glacier directly behind it. Like basically every other place in the country, Bettmeralp is about 3 hours from our doorstep via train.
Lori and I skied both Saturday and Sunday with our friend Mary. Weather and snow was perfect, however visibility was unfortunately poor. We managed to find some runs in the sun on Sunday, but there were moments where you couldn't see more than 10m ahead of you due to the cloud. That level of visibility makes skiing difficult if not impossible, and not to mention dangerous, so we took our time getting around. But the eeriness of phantom skiers disappearing in and out of the fog is an experience to remember.
